International audience In the 1980s, tourism in the outer island of Vanuatu was still restricted, mainly for cultural preservation reasons. The starting signal for mass tourism in Vanuatu was given in 1993 with the opening of some "cabins" at the Port-Resolution Yacht-Club in Tanna in 1993. Twenty years later, this project which began like a success story, became a very dividing business for the local community. In a broader scope, mass-tourism, frequently presented as "eco-tourism", has played a central role in Tanna for the monetarization of rural communities. Dr. Tabani will also discuss how monetarization has also led to different forms of commodification of local cultures, of sometimes turning kastom in a mere spectacle. This commodification of kastom is particularly problematic concerning the organization of huge traditional ceremonies.
