Description

This book presents the papers end panel discussion of the fifth conference of the Fiji Association of Women Graduates with the same title Women, Science and Technologya South Pacific perspective. Many of the issues raised at the Conference are not new, for example, the scarcity of women studying or working in science-related areas, the bias in attitudes against women who select this as a career path, the developpment of training and technology oriented more towards males, and the limited or no choices of women in reproductive health matters. Presenting the keynote address, Suliana Siwatibau raises four issues: masculinity of science, the universally applicable method of science, the power and sucess of modern science and technology, and the need for public accountability in the practice of science and the developpment of technology. Health issues are addressed by papers and presentations that highlight concerns in the lack of accurate information and incomplet data collected,  a call for women to pay more attention to their own health, and describes a new device that offers women a better choice in reproductive health. The food technology theme include papers that call attention to food labelling, food standards, food additives and Pacific Food Compostion project undertaken by a team of Pacific researchers. Young graduates describe and discuss issues related to career oppotunities and career choices in science and technology calling for support for girls who decide to take science/tecnology career path. A closer look at science curricula in school as well as teaching mehods being used is suggested. Papers from the fourth conference session - Friendly technology and ethnical dilemmas - discuss a range of topics that include energy use and electrical appliances, the internet, genetic engineering, and agricultural technologies. This collective view calls for serious action on the issues raised.
