The paper focuses on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in Port-Vila, Vanuatu, particularly in the urban informal settlement of Seaside Tongoa area. The survey covers topics such as gender relations, health, sexuality, family planning, sexual assault, female and male "sex workers", etc. Despite prevention programs developed by the government and NGOs, Vanuatu records an increasing number of "premature" and unwanted pregnancies and cases of STIs, revealing a high rate of unprotected intercourse. The paper also discusses the concept of transactional sexuality in Vanuatu, where sexual intercourse is exchanged for money, gifts, or food. The paper highlights the need for prevention organizations to take into consideration local conceptions and practices of sexuality and to target groups that are at increased risk for STI transmission.
