The project focused on the delineation and sampling of the Arapus site and surveying other coastal locations for early settlement sites. The excavation and survey crew were based at the village of Mangaliliu, with half involved in surveying along the coast and the other half in excavation at the Arapus site. The 2001 field season provided a detailed picture of the extent and chronology of the Arapus site, with ongoing analysis of animal and bird bones. Radiocarbon dates were received in December 2001. Adjustments were made to the length of the field season due to higher costs caused by inflation in Vanuatu. The anticipated outcomes included raising local awareness of archaeology, training Ni-Vanuatu archaeologists, and establishing a comprehensive sequence of cultural and faunal change. The project is on track to achieve these outcomes.
