Description

The paper focuses on the investigation of the initial human colonization of Vanuatu and its later transformations. The project involved trainees from 11 islands, including Richard and Marcelin from the Museum. Excavations were conducted at the northeastern extremity of the current village of Mangaliliu, near a permanent stream. Test pits were opened up to avoid houses, ornamental gardens, and other village features. The practical objectives for 2001 were to delineate and sample the Arapus site and conduct an extended survey of other likely coastal locations. The project in subsequent years would be based on the results of 2001 and continue with site survey and excavation.
