Description

The paper discusses the geological framework of Maluku Tengah and the potential for distinguishing distinctive temper provinces and detecting local pottery trade. The study compares tempers in modern sherds, local sands, and ceramic raw materials, as well as tempers in prehistoric and early historic pottery from various localities in the Ambon-Haruku-Saparua island chain. The results of petrographic studies of Maluku Tengah pottery are presented elsewhere and summarized in Dickinson (2006).
