In Vanuatu, like many Pacific Island countries, the kokonas (coconut) is considered a tree of life. All elements of the kokonas—roots, trunk, flowers, leaves, flesh, water, and husk are regarded as useful in Vanuatu. This empirical article illustrates how the kokonas informs Vanuatu research methodology using the metaphor and analogy of the development of a coconut leaf. The framework describes the five stages of the research process, which was undertaken using the Vanuatu cultural dialogue, historian, and cultural consideration kastom (traditional culture). The framework acknowledges and complements other Pacific research methodologies developed by other Pacific researchers, contributing to a robust and culturally informed research landscape for the region.
