Description

The Republic of Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific, recognises the rights of its citizens with disabilities as stipulated in its constitution and has ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Although this may be deemed a positive move, most schools are still not fully equipped to cater for the needs of students with disabilities. This scoping review aimed to critically analyse the progress and challenges of disability-inclusive education practices (DIEP) across the additional 14 Island Nations of the Pacific region to make recommendations based on the review that may advance and inform disability-inclusive practices in Vanuatu. The review reports the findings of a systematic review search of education databases that indicate nine areas of attention. These themes are policy and legislation, budget, awareness, collaboration, early intervention, resources, training, accessibility, and monitoring. Each theme is discussed as lessons that can be learned for Vanuatu.
