Description
[EN] This book review written by Anna Naupa for The Journal of Pacific History examines the posthumous collection of writings by Grace Mera Molisa (1946–2002), titled "The Writings of Grace Mera Molisa (1946–2002): Kastom, Politik mo ol Raet blong ol Woman long Vanuatu" and edited by Howard Van Trease. Spanning three decades, the volume compiled by her family and Van Trease features narrative poetry, essays, prose, and manifestos documenting Molisa's journey from Ambae island to her role as chief advisor and private secretary to Vanuatu's first Prime Minister, Walter Lini. The review highlights the inclusion of out-of-print and suppressed works, such as the controversial 1991 publication "Raet Blong Pipol", alongside previously unpublished poetry recording the breakdown of her working relationship with Lini. Naupa emphasizes that this literary compilation offers an unprecedented insider critique of postcolonial leadership, corruption, and Pacific feminism, challenging conventional political hagiographies in Vanuatu.
