Description
[EN] Introduction to the special issue of the Journal de la Société des Océanistes (No. 162) dedicated to the practice of sand drawing (DSS) in Vanuatu, inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Authored by six multidisciplinary scholars, this paper reviews the history of early ethnographic research (Layard, Deacon, Ascher) and outlines contemporary approaches to this traditional graphic art, including the anthropology of memory, linguistic terminology across vernacular languages, cultural evolution through phylogenetic methods, and ethnomathematical modeling using graph theory. The introduction also addresses the integration of sand drawing into Vanuatu's national school curriculum and highlights collaborative field methodologies with indigenous experts to analyze the underlying formal, cognitive, and cosmological systems of this practice.
